The brand name of 4711 was taken from the house number of the former location of Ferdinarnd Muhlens' office in Cologne: Glockengasse 4711. From 2003 to 2006 the company was owned by Procter & Gamble, the rights were sold in December 2006 to the Mäurer & Wirtz perfume company of Aachen. Legend has it that in October of 1792 a Carthusian monk present Wilhelm Muelhens with a "miracle water" wedding present. Believing in the water's ability he manufactured and sold the formula from his location in Cologne's Glockengasse.
